Skid Steer Case Drain Explained: Which Attachments Need It?
If a skid steer attachment arrives with three hydraulic hoses instead of the expected two, do not treat the third hose as an optional extra. On many motor-driven attachments, it is the skid steer case drain line. Its job is not to power the attachment but to carry internal leakage oil away from the hydraulic motor case while keeping pressure around the motor seals within the limits specified by the manufacturer.
Quick answer: not every skid steer attachment needs a case drain, and high-flow hydraulics do not automatically mean that one is required. The correct decision comes from the attachment motor design, required hydraulic flow, operating pressure, allowable case pressure and hose arrangement. A mounting plate that fits and two couplers that click together are useful clues, but hydraulics prefer specifications to optimism.
What Is a Case Drain on a Skid Steer?
Hydraulic motors have small internal clearances that allow lubrication and normal leakage between moving parts. On a motor designed for external drainage, this leakage collects inside the motor housing and needs a controlled route back into the hydraulic system. The hydraulic motor case drain provides that path. If case pressure rises beyond the motor’s permitted range, the shaft seal and other internal components may be exposed to conditions they were not designed to handle.
The important point is that there is no universal case-drain pressure for every attachment. What Is the Third Hydraulic Line on a Skid Steer Attachment?
Most powered skid steer attachments already have a pressure hose and a main return hose. When a separate case drain is required, it commonly appears as a third hydraulic line. The pressure hose delivers working oil to the motor, the return hose carries the main working flow back, and the case drain handles leakage from inside the motor housing.

Which Skid Steer Attachments Need a Case Drain?
The safest rule is simple: case drain requirement follows the specific hydraulic circuit, not the attachment name. A forestry mulcher may require one while another hydraulic attachment does not. The opposite example is just as useful. Bobcat states that its current hydraulic auger requires no case drain. That means “hydraulic motor attachment” does not automatically equal “three hydraulic hoses”. Mulchers, flail mowers, planers, stump grinders and trenchers are therefore worth checking carefully, but they should never be labelled “case-drain required” as a whole category. The motor specification wins the argument.
Does High Flow Mean You Need a Case Drain?
No. Hydraulic flow and case drain are separate compatibility checks. Flow tells you how much oil the loader can supply; case drain tells you how the attachment motor manages internal leakage. Bobcat’s current high-flow loader systems range from 26.9 to 36.6 gpm at 3,500 psi, while the S86 skid-steer loader and T86 compact track loader can provide 42 gpm at 4,061 psi with Super Flow. Case Drain vs Return Line: Why You Should Not Treat Them as the Same Hose
The main return circuit can see pressure created by couplers, hoses, valves and other restrictions. A case drain may need a much more controlled pressure environment. Parker’s F11/F12 example recommends 3–5 bar case pressure and uses dedicated drain ports, which illustrates why connecting a drain hose to any convenient return connection is poor engineering practice. Oil condition matters as well. For the same F11/F12 motor family, Parker recommends hydraulic-fluid cleanliness of at least ISO 20/18/13 and 10 μm absolute filtration under normal operating conditions. What Happens If a Required Case Drain Is Blocked or Not Connected?
When an attachment motor requires external drainage, a blocked, restricted or incorrectly connected line can increase case pressure. Depending on the motor design, this can contribute to seal leakage or shorter component life. Temperature and oil viscosity should also be checked rather than blaming the hose immediately. Skid Steer Case Drain Checklist Before Buying an Attachment
Before ordering any motor-driven skid steer attachment, confirm five items together: required hydraulic flow, operating pressure, external case-drain requirement, maximum or recommended case pressure, and machine-side coupler arrangement. If the manufacturer also specifies filtration or oil cleanliness, include those requirements in the check. This approach is much safer than asking only whether the attachment is “standard flow” or “high flow”.
